How to show up to your first group run

What to bring, when to arrive, and why nobody minds if you're slow.

Turning up to a group of runners you don’t know can feel like a lot. It’s easier than it looks, and everyone in the group had a first run too.

Arrive ten minutes early. That gives you time to find the group, say hello to the coach and tell them it’s your first time. Tell them roughly how long you usually run, even if the honest answer is “not much”. That helps them put you with the right people.

Bring the basics. Running shoes you’re used to, comfortable clothes for the weather, water, and your phone. In the evening, wear something light or bright.

Don’t worry about pace. Group runs have people at different speeds. On easy runs the group waits at turns or loops back. Nobody gets left on their own, and nobody cares how fast you are on day one.

Ask questions. Where’s the route going? How long is it? Is there a regroup point? Coaches and regulars are happy to explain.

Stay for a few minutes after. The chat after the run is half the reason people keep coming back. It’s also where you find people who run your pace.

Our Monday open run is open to everyone. Download the app before you come so you can check in. It’s a good first step.

General advice, not medical advice. If pain persists, see a doctor or physiotherapist.
